Ace Armstrong vs. the Alien Scumbags! - Early level details

Following its announcement on the blog last week, we’re happy to be able to provide you with some more details of our forthcoming PSP and PS3 Minis title, Ace Armstrong vs. the Alien Scumbags!

Ace Armstrong vs. the Alien Scumbags! is a horizontally scrolling shooter featuring humorous 50s Sci-Fi cartoon stylings and an all-new weapons system based around Ace’s unique Recyl-o-Ray weapon.

Today, we can reveal a little more about each of the levels Ace will be travelling through in his quest to defeat the Scumbag menace. We’ve included some early images that inspired the settings for each level – the final levels are far more detailed, with loads of crazy action and HUGE bosses, but I hope these give a flavour. Enjoy!

Level 1 plays out across Earth, with a variety of landmarks visible in the background as Ace sets off on his do-or-die mission. Beginning in London, England, Ace will have to speed across the continents of Earth in order to catch a ride on a U.S. Rocket before it is destroyed.

Level 2 sees Ace arriving in an Asteroid Field beyond Earth’s atmosphere. The Alien Scumbags are clearing this field for their Factory Ship and are using a huge Asteroid Eater to accomplish this. Ace must avoid the Asteroid Eater monster and find some way of stopping it before it clears a path to Earth.

Level 3 sees Ace flying inside the Scumbag’s huge Factory Ship, which he must disable before it reaches Earth and builds enough Scumbag fighting units to end our chances of survival for good. As he flies through the bowels of this vast ship he can’t help but notice that something sinister is being built ahead of him. Let’s hope it’s not something nasty...

Level 4 sees Ace, having destroyed the ‘nasty something’ from Level 3, landing on the Scumbag Home World. He must battle his way across its bizarre landscape to defeat the Scumbag leader – surely there can’t be anything else to worry about once he’s out of the way? Can there?

Level 5 sees Ace transported to the freakish Dimension X. Here, he must prevail against the fearsome Scumbag menace behind all this mess. Our hero will need all the skills he’s displayed in getting this far to win the day and return to Earth a hero. Go Ace!

Stay tuned for more news from Ace and the Scumbags very soon...

Will this be geared more toward a casual audience, easy enough for the majority of people to make it through the whole game, or will it be like Gradius III arcade?
[LJ] Al says:

The difficulty level and enemy waves, etc. are still very much work in progress, but we're aiming to ease people into the game with the first level and then steadily build things until the last level is really tough. Due to the project constraints of a Minis title we could only justify 5 levels for Ace, so we want to make sure people really get the most out of the content we have included. We've really gone to town on this one - especially considering it's a Mini - and I think people will be happy with the end result in terms of the 'game-per-buck' they'll be getting. :-)
